The launch of the ‘Chairman’s Gavel’ on its way around the Leyland Group was held at Leyland Hesketh Lodge No 986 on Monday 6 October 2014 at Leyland Masonic Hall. There were many brethren in attendance, not only to witness the launch but, to also witness the initiation of a candidate on the night, Jonathon Measures. This evening’s ceremony would be something which Jonathon would remember for a long time and in years to come he could indeed boast that he was present at the launch of the travelling gavel.
The Group’ Chairman, Stewart Seddon along with his gavel, was accompanied by 8 of his group officers: Chris Blackwell, John Lucas, Brian Haslam, Steve Lunt, Dave Bishop, Jeff Lucas, Eric Hart and Mike Pinckard. Stewart presented the gavel to the lodge’ Worshipful Master, Ian Smith, following the initiation ceremony. He said that ‘This is not an emblem of power; rather it is an emblem of visit’and thanked him and the Brethren of Leyland Hesketh lodge for their hospitality. Stewart then challenged Ian to better 8 visitors when he transmits the gavel into the care of the next lodge’ worshipful master. Ian took on this challenge by accepting the gavel on behalf of the lodge and said that ‘he looked forward to being the custodian of the gavel until the time for passing it on’.
All the visiting officers on the night enjoyed the evening very much and they were treated to an excellent 1st degree ceremony where Jonathan was welcomed into freemasonry in superb fashion. The festive board followed the lodge closure in the very convivial surroundings of Wellington Park where, good camaraderie was enjoyed by all.
The next custodian of the Travelling Gavel will be David Topping, Worshipful Master of Longton Lodge No 6237 and the presentation ceremony is expected to take place on the evening of Wednesday, 22 October.
