Following the inaugural presentation of the Travelling Gavel to the worshipful master of Leyland Hesketh lodge, Ian Smith and 7 of his brethren, made up a visiting team to hand the gavel on to Longton Lodge No 6237. Ian’s team of visitors comprised Gordon Maclellan, Norman Singleton, David Rotheram, Bob Kay, Tom Oakes, Lloyd Davies and Jim Clayton. They attended Longton Lodge No 6237 held on Wednesday 22 October 2014.
All brethren in attendance witnessed a splendid demonstration of a First Degree ceremony which was worked by the Worshipful Master, David Topping and his team. The visitors made particular mention of Philip Monks, the lodge’s Junior Deacon who, in addition to guiding the Candidate around the lodge room, delivered a marvellous explanation of the Charge after Initiation.
Following the ceremony, Ian Smith presented the Travelling Gavel to the Worshipful Master of Longton Lodge and expressed a wish in keeping with the rules of the gavel that, as many Brethren as possible would support David when he transmits the Gavel into the care of the worshipful master of the next Lodge.
The Brethren retired to the festive board which will be remembered for great hospitality, fellowship and fun. This was the climax to a wonderful evening and members and visitors alike will remember the evening for their part in handing on the gavel.
The Travelling Gavel will continue its journey throughout the Leyland Group when it will be presented to Alistair Milner, worshipful master of Eccleston Lodge No 7754 on the evening Thursday 20 November 2014.
