Old Huttonian Lodge No 7614 held one of their scheduled meetings at Hutton Grammar school recently. This meeting was special for a number of reasons: David Topping became a joining member of the lodge, the travelling gavel was on the move and there was a first degree demonstration.
The lodge was opened by Martin Swarbrick WM and the lodge business attended to before a ballet was taken allowing David Topping to become a member of the lodge. The next item of business was to carry out a demonstration of the first degree. Here the worshipful master and his team of officers gave an excellent performance. The first degree working tools were presented by Neil Spalding and the charge after initiation presented by John Howard. There was no shortage of volunteers for a wannabe candidate and it was David Topping who was chosen given his aptly timed joining.
The demonstration and meeting complete all members and visitors retired to the school dining room for a festive board. It was here that the Chairman’s Travelling Gavel appeared. A delegation from Farington Lodge No 7277 had travelled over from Wellington Park, Leyland to deliver the gavel to Martin and Old Huttonian lodge. David Poulter presented the Chairman’s Gavel and in his rhetoric he named Martin as A Beast in the East which went down hilariously.
